Dachshunds were bred in Germany over 300 years ago to hunt badgers, with their long body and short legs designed to follow prey into burrows. Their name literally means 'badger dog' in German. Available in Standard and Miniature sizes, with smooth, wire-haired, or long-haired coats, Dachshunds are bold, clever, and surprisingly stubborn. Their unique body shape makes weight management critically important to prevent spinal injuries.
Dietary Needs
Weight management is the single most important dietary consideration for Dachshunds. Excess weight puts severe strain on their elongated spine, increasing the risk of intervertebral disc disease. Small breed, low-calorie formulas with joint support are ideal. Avoid overfeeding treats. Glucosamine and chondroitin support spinal health. Calcium and phosphorus balance supports their unique skeletal structure.
Common health concerns: Intervertebral disc disease (IVDD), obesity, dental disease, patellar luxation, progressive retinal atrophy
