Shih Tzus are an ancient breed developed in the palaces of Chinese emperors, possibly by crossing Lhasa Apsos with Pekingese. Their name means 'lion dog' in Mandarin, and they were bred purely as companion dogs for royalty. Shih Tzus have a luxurious double coat, a sweet and outgoing temperament, and adapt well to apartment living. They're sturdy little dogs with a surprising amount of energy despite their pampered heritage.
Dietary Needs
Small breed kibble sized for their small, slightly undershot jaw. Their long coat requires omega fatty acids, biotin, and zinc for healthy growth and shine. Shih Tzus can be prone to food allergies, so limited-ingredient or novel-protein diets may suit some individuals. Dental health support is important as small breeds are prone to overcrowding and periodontal disease.
Common health concerns: Brachycephalic airway syndrome, dental overcrowding, eye problems, patellar luxation, allergies
